Chapter Twenty-five

David was sitting around the house watching the highlights from the hockey game before getting ready for his romantic evening with Alexis, when the telephone rang. He was so into the fight that broke out on the ice; he didn’t even check the caller ID before picking it up like he normally did. It had become a ritual lately for Rosalind to continuously blow up his house, cell, and the shop phone. It became a must to always check the caller ID.

“Hello?” he answered, eyes still glued to the television.

“David?” Rosalind asked, surprised that David had answered the phone.

David became irritated just hearing Rosalind’s voice. “What do you want, girl?” He started to hang up the phone, but figured he might as well get it over with since she had him on the phone, or she would never stop calling.

“How are you?”

“Rosalind, what is it? I’m busy,” he lied.

Rosalind really didn’t want anything other than to be back in David’s life. He had caught her off guard when he answered the phone, so she didn’t have time to make up a story. She had to think quickly. Her mind took her back to the time when she watched an episode of Diff’rent Strokes. Kimberly and Willis had conjured up a story to get Muhammad Ali to come visit Arnold under the pretense that this was his dying wish.

“David, I got cancer,” she blurted from out of nowhere. Rosalind had made up some lies in the past, but she had shocked herself with this one.

David snapped his attention away from the television. “Are you sure?” he asked, knowing that she was capable of coming up with some wild and crazy stories.

“Yes, David, I’m sure,” Rosalind stated morosely.

David began feeling sorry for the woman that he swore he never wanted anything else to do with. He had watched his own father die slowly from the same disease and still felt the loss, so to hear that someone he once cared about had the same ugly disease, softened his heart a little.

“Where’s the cancer at, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“Cervical—just like my mom,” she lied.

“Damn, it must be hereditary or somethin’,” David said, saddened by the fact that Rosalind had the same disease that took her mother away also. David knew Rosalind could be psycho at times, but he didn’t believe she would ever play with something so serious.

Rosalind couldn’t believe that David was actually buying her story, so she really began playing the role. “Yeah, it is,” she said, sounding depressed. “That’s why I’ve been tryin’a get in contact with you, but you never returned any of my calls.”

David could hear the hurt and pain in Rosalind’s voice. “I’m sorry, Ros, I just thought . . . never mind,” he said, stopping in mid-sentence. “Just know that I apologize.” David really did feel bad. He didn’t know what to say next so he said the first thing that came to mind. “Do you need anything?”

Yeah, nigga, I need you to come over here and fuck the shit outta me.
